Survival Guide: Guns
Guns should be the corner stone of your post-apocalyptic survival cache. They are truly a one stop shop for all of your survival needs, and, oddly enough, the item that the Armageddon surviving protagonist most often lacks. Guns provide a means self defense against the infected, the mutated, roaming bandits, and robots, depending on the scenario you find yourself in. They provide you with a power and authority, allowing you to rule over a motley band of survivors in a ramshackle fortress. They provide food by allowing you to hunt or rob. The type of weapon which you have should be your first consideration. Any gun is better than no gun, but there are firearms that are of more use than others. Shotguns are the most universally viable weapon in a post-apocalyptic landscape. They are simple to use and maintain, have a ready stash of ammunition scattered around the ruins of society, and can be accurately fired from the hip in moments of bravado. Shotguns can be modified to match your new, tattered, make shift fashion sense by sawing off the stock and barrel(s). If you can, get a shot gun. Your next best bet is a high powered rifle. This weapon will allow you to engage enemies at great distances and looks particularly intimidating with a scope. It requires some skill to aim and has limited usefulness at close range. If you are lucky enough to obtain a shotgun, at least one person in your band of road warriors should be armed with a rifle. Pistols should generally be carried only as a side arm as they tend to run out of ammo at inopportune moments. If you happen to come across military weaponry in your travels, you should always it up. Typically, these weapons are either fully-automatic or can fire explosive devices, some times both. Possessing these weapons will greatly improve not only your chance of survival, but your social standing amongst the remnants of humanity.
Should your weapon ever run out of ammunition, DON’T DISCARD IT! Even unloaded, it can be used as an instrument of intimidation. Plus, you might come across some more ammunition.
That should be everything you need to know about guns. You should definitely get yours pre-apocalypse as they become difficult to find after calamity. If you are fleeing your dwelling in a panic, always go back for the gun. You won’t regret it.
