Survival Guide: Location
Your location is vital to you surviving, post-apocalypse. You should follow one simple mantra: STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE. Large population centers are likely targets for belligerents, provide a breeding ground for disease, and are where you’ll run into the most zombies. Generally, your best bet is going to be to head for the hills and to live off the land until you think the coast is clear.
Resist the temptation to gather supplies in urban areas. True, there is a higher probability of finding necessities, but the likelihood of you being attacked by whatever is lurking in destroyed cities is highest when you enter them. If you must, gather from the outskirts of towns and have a plan of escape. If you are traveling with a group, do not spread out. Watching each others’ backs is more important than covering ground. Get supplies during the day, and from well lit areas. There is no reason why you should be cavorting around dangerous areas in the dark. It’s a recipe for disaster.
Another important tip is to avoid creepy looking towns. Based on what we know from pre-apocalyptic predictions: small, freakish towns always possess some dark secret, typically in the form of a giant mutant that will eat you and your party. No matter what your curiosity, just go around. You won’t regret it.
So, where should you settle? In the mountains, away from roads and settlements. This will keep you safe from undead and roving bandits and will give you a higher likelihood of finding game to eat. If you are in the north, head south for more temperate climates. Be careful, though. You don’t want to go too far south and have to deal with sweltering heat and humidity.
After a few months, send out a party to check to see if the coast is clear and to gather more survivors for your tribe. You may get lucky and find a relatively stable and functioning society is in place that you can just integrate yourself into. Things will be back to normal, and you’ll have avoided all of the strife and civil war.
