Find of the Week: MOBA
I love and hate art at the same time. Actually, I take that back. I love art but I hate artists. Call me a cynic, but there are few people more full of BS than the self-conscious artists, regardless of the quality of their product. Accordingly, I mock them even when I enjoy what they create. Admittedly, it’s much less gratifying to mock a good artist because you know, in spite of all of their pretense, they’re making something that is actually worth making. Obviously, this complicates mockery. Enter: the Museum of Bad Art, a Boston based institution dedicated to recognizing the work of the inept artist. The museum’s gaudy halls contain a small collection of the worst that humanity has framed. Subjects range from poorly painted dogs, to surreal landscapes, to grotesque nudes. The paintings and sculptures are acquired through various thrift stores and trash heaps, typically costing less than five dollars. They are then preserved and displayed with satirical descriptions for the enjoyment of the public. Having browsed their online samples, I’m certainly going to make a detour to visit the museum the next time I’m in Boston. Have ye a look: http://www.museumofbadart.org/
